Presidential Inauguration Diversity Menu

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the 2013 Presidential Inaguration we are in the process of creating the Presidential Inauguration Diversity Menu. The menu will represent a wide variety of foods from nations throughout the world served creatively and presented in unity throughout the dinner.

The idea came to me from President Obama’s Inauguration speech when he quoted the Declaration of Independence saying “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” I started thinking that I’d like to translate that into a menu where the food was “created equal” by featuring all styles, cultures and tastes of cuisine together. The challenge is to prepare a meal giving an equal balance of taste and presentation to each dish without overpowering the more subtle tasting dishes while also showing respect for the culture and style of service that each item on the menu represents.

Imagine an event where each nationality can experience one another in a non-threatening and supportive way through a wonderfully prepared and diverse menu while talking through their differences and at the same time finding commonalities with one another to build upon during dinner. Now thats a dinner conversation!

Depending on where one lives on this amazing planet can define their lives and belief systems which tends to exclude those of a different culture, thereby creating differences between us. As citizens of the world and members of the human race the one thing that we all share in common is the need to eat and drink. Why not build on that common trait and build relationships in our own neighborhoods and communities that bring people together instead of building walls between us. How many of us have never met our neighbor in the apartment next door?

I’d like to take the idea of the Presidential Inauguration Diversity Menu and create culturally diverse neighborhood events where food from all over the world is prepared and served in its cultural style and presentation, so that people can learn and experience the various melting pot of nationalities in our city. Through these neighborhood and community events it is my hope that as a people we will not be separated by our differences but be united by our shared qualities and experiences.

In the end I believe that more good can be found in the world by getting people of different cultures and beliefs together to share a beautiful and diverse meal with a nice bottle of wine than we could ever imagine.
