This past weekend on April 29, 2012 in remembrance of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, Shannon Events was honored to provide the catering for The Korean American Coalition Awards Reception for the winners of the “Diversity Is Our Strength” essay contest.
Since the devastating Los Angeles Riots in 1992, the Korean American Community has created close interethnic partnerships with various ethnic communities, particularly the African American, Jewish and Latino communities. With this in mind the KAC offered an amazing opportunity for young Los Angeles students to earn scholarships totaling $10,000 in value while learning about the history of their community as well as how their community fits into the racially diverse city of Los Angeles. All of the participants were brought on stage where the winners were given their various awards.
The Los Angeles Riots of 1992 paralyzed the city. By May 4, 1992 53 people had lost their lives, 2400 were injured and 12,000 were arrested; and an estimated $1 Billion in property damage from fires, theft, and vandalism had occurred.
During the event the city of Los Angeles recognized the tragedy of the events of April 29, 1992 and honored the innocent victims who lost their lives and paid respect to their families. Those who lost property and livelihoods were also honored for their efforts to rebuild and bring healing to their communities.
Los Angeles is a diverse city with over 220 languages spoken here with residents from over 140 countries. Our work in event planning and catering allows us to be a part of some incredible events that take place in Southern California. This event really had me thinking about how much our city has grown and changed for the better during the past twenty years.
The wonderful event took place in downtown Los Angeles and featured live music, a variety of culturally diverse foods and entertainment and guest speakers from the LAPD, the LAUSD, various community leaders and the Korean American Coalition.
It was an honor for Shannon Events to be asked to be a part of such a special occasion and remeberence and we are proud of the advancements made by all of the amazingly diverse communities that make up our city.
All the best,
Shannon
